Working on trees that are affecting our highways can cause significant disruptions to traffic and health and safety risks to operatives. An innovative approach, using a double decker bus has allowed our team of operatives to work safely clearing overhanging trees and vegetation whilst minimising disruption to traffic.

In partnership with Balfour Beatty and West Sussex County Council our team of highly skilled and regularly trained operatives carefully removed overhanging branches and vegetation from the top deck of an open-top double-decker bus. Working from this specialist vehicle allowed roads to remain open, with minimal disruption occurring when cut materials were chipped and cleared by an operative working from a support vehicle.

Travelling throughout West Sussex our team were able to clear overhanging branches and vegetation from roads in Shoreham, Steyning and…………. These works have ensured that West Sussex County Council are able to maintain their tree maintenance schedule and keep local highways clear from hazards and obstructions.

Autumn is a critical time for tree care, as it marks the transition from the growing season to dormancy. Proper care during this season helps ensure the health and longevity of your trees. Here are some important tasks to consider for autumn tree care:

One of our favourite things about our jobs is the diversity of sites which we get to work on.

We were asked to assist in clearing a site that since 1946 had been home to the National Gas Turbine Testing establishment where Concorde’s jet engines were developed! Owned by the Ministry of Defence, the site was decommissioned in 2000 but there is still plenty of evidence of the days of testing those mighty jet engines! Now being developed by @berkeleygroupplc, Hartland Village, looks set to become a wonderful new community surrounded by rich natural woodland and embedded with an interesting history!

We cleared the site of all soft vegetation to allow access for the next phases of development using a flail and forestry mulcher. We have also undertaken works in the surrounding areas, felling trees that posed a risk to passing pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and clearing vegetation that surrounds waterworks which require future inspection.

Not all jobs are the same, and our latest project certainly stands out from the crowd! In preparation for development, we were asked to clear a site, nothing new about that. However, this site has an explosive history!

Located amid farmland on the Surrey green belt, this 45-acre site has recently been granted permission for a new development of nine detached homes. Although this will be the first time this land has been used for residential purposes, it won’t be the first time this farmland has had an alternative purpose.

The site was developed between 1938 and 1939 and was constructed under the responsibility of the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, with its principal function to store shells for 3.7” and 4.5” aircraft guns and rockets, with a maximum capacity of 960 tons of ammunition! The depot was fully stocked by mid-August 1939 and its first issues were made in September 1939, four days before the declaration of war.

Although the site is being re-developed, not all the site’s history will be lost as ‘Store 4’ has been identified for preservation. Store 4 has retained its southern loading bay, with retained conveyor supports and earth embankments towards its eastern side alongside original features such as by original door latches, bull light fixtures and gated entrances.

Despite it’s unusual past, this site was a straightforward clearance. We sectionally dismantled trees marked by the client for felling and utilising a 13t excavator and forestry mulching head we cleared all soft vegetation. The site was left clear, tidy, and most importantly accessible for the next phase of the development. We look forward to seeing how this site progresses and how the history of the site will be incorporated with the modern and sustainable building approach the developers will be taking.

‘The abandoned house on the corner’ has gained lots of local and media attention over recent years, so we were excited when RTT Services were invited to carry out an initial survey of the site with a view to undertaking the work required that has been long overdue.

As the community will remember, the plot sat untouched for a long while with no attention. This led to Arun District Council applying for an enforcement order on the property, legislating that work needed to take place with immediate effect.

RTT Services were selected from other contractors under guidance from the local tree officer and local authority.

The main cause of concern at the site was any protected ecology at the property and the damage the trees would cause to wildlife if no action was taken.

Once the site was surveyed, plans discussed and finalised, the ecology managed and well considered, work could begin.

The site was accessed and cleared in its majority with our tree shears mounted on our 13-ton excavator to clear through the lower level vegetation and smaller trees.

Once space was made, we were able to safely fell the larger trees that were adjacent to the busy road. The trees, of mixed species (Poplars, Sycamores and Ash trees) needed to be mechanically felled due to the severe decay. The majority had large cavities in them at precarious points or were over mature and some were in sufficient decay in the main base posing a serious risk to users of the neighbouring highway. 

All wood arisings, chip and timber were then extracted from site. All stumps were ground out using our commercial tracked stump grinder, in order to prevent regeneration of unnecessary and unwanted vegetation.

Lastly, our forestry mulcher finalised the clearing of the site. Mulching is a cost-effective and efficient means of regenerating the top layer of soil in preparation for further works or future planting. The surrounding ground was then grass seeded in preparation for the property’s new life. 

Bats have been recently reported of entering and leaving the smaller surrounding buildings on site and it looks to have the potential of being a charming building once again.

From the images, you can see how much space has now been made, the site looks clean and tidy and now a million miles away from its previously overgrown, untouched state.
